Fear needs no introduction. We're all familiar with it. Even those who are fearless are acquainted with it, maybe even more so, and because they've learnt how to manage it they've earned the title of fearless.
"Boldness is a mask for fear, however great." John Dryden
What is the cause of fear then? I know that when we were born into this world we began as a blank canvas and truly fearless wanting to explore our environment. When I was growing up as a child my mother use to tell me to stay away from the river, yes I did grow up with rivers not far from my home, and deep water. I never learnt how to swim as a result of this, despite my teachers' valiant efforts to teach me.
"Love is what we were born with, fear is what we learn." Marianne Williamson
So, fear can be something we learn subconsciously. The other form of fear is fearing the unknown, especially, when we are uncertain of the outcome of a situation. This is the most prevalent type of fear, in my opinion, that stops us from doing what we want to do in life. For example, fear of failure, rejection, not being good enough, low self-confidence and the list goes on.
"Nothing in this life is to be feared. It is time to understand more and fear less." Marie Curie
The question is "how do we solve this?" Well, my view is that it is not a problem to be solved, more like we need to find a way to work with it. Because we will constantly meet new challenges in our daily lives, we need to turn our fears into positive energy that excites us to act instead of immobilizing us.
"Don't be afraid of your fears. They're not there to scare you. They're there to let you know that something is worth it." CJoyce C
Fear is a mental construction and we need to deal with it mentally but through positive action. So, be conscious of the fear and understand the reason it's there, most of the time our fears are unfounded. Then turn whatever negative thoughts you're having about the situation into positive affirmations. The more you do this the better and more confident you will get.
"Thinking will not overcome fear but action will." W Clement Stone
Let fear act as a motivator in your life. Whenever you fear a situation and overcome it, it turns you into an adept and stronger person. When we come out of our comfort zone, we feel discomfort but as we push through this barrier we evolve into a state of higher consciousness. It's a transformational process. Fearless: creating the courage to change the things you can by Steve Chandler is one of many books that can help you develop the skills you require for a fearless life.
"Always do what you are afraid to do." Ralph Waldo Emerson
Don't let fear stop you from creating your dreams or living your life. Dreaming big means bigger challenges but the reward is greater. Keep feeling the fear and doing it anyway until you earn the title of fearless!
"There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure." Paulo Caelho
I'll leave you to ponder over this, until next time.
What is it you fear?
Failure is nothing but a word
Nothing to fear
What is it you hold dear?
Don't be discouraged about what you hear
Like walking on a tightrope
Keep your eyes focus on the end road
Hard it must be
To separate the diligent from the lazy
But success is assured
To all those who walk this road
S R Lore
